AT least nine soldiers have been reportedly killed in a terrorist attack on Girinmasa area of Yauri Local Council of Kebbi State.
According to a post on X on Tuesday, March 24, by security analyst, Bakatsine, suspected Lakurawa fighters launched the attack on troops stationed in the area, resulting in casualties among the soldiers, adding: “Today, Lakurawa terrorists killed several Nigerian soldiers in Girinmasa, Yauri LGA of Kebbi State.
“May Allah have mercy on the fallen heroes and bring to end this insecurity ravaging Nigeria.”
The military authorities were yet to issued an official statement on the attack.
Another report claimed that the attack ocurred in Shanga Local Council.
Eyewitnesses said the attack happened in Giro Masa community when security operatives were suddenly targeted by the assailants operating in the area, who were tracked down to a construction company yard.
Following a tip-off from residents, soldiers were dispatched to secure the site, but were ambushed along the way, resulting in the deaths of the soldies and two civilians, with two military trucks reportedly set on fire.
Governor Nasir Idris visited the mortuary and accident and emergency unit of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Birnin Kebbi, where victims were taken to.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, March 25, Idris described the attack as barbaric, assuring that the state government would cover the medical bills of the injured and provide support to the families of the deceased.
He noted: “This is a sad incident. These are the soldiers who protect the lives of Kebbi residents, yet they found themselves in this situation. The Kebbi State Government will not relent in its efforts to protect the lives of its citizens.”
The governor also prayed for the souls of the deceased, reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening security across the state.
He later visited the scene of the attack for an on-the-spot assessment.
