Parties Hold Primaries June 16 To 25 In 22 Restored State Constituencies
POLITICAL parties in Nigeria are to hold their primary elections in 22 state constituencies across Benue, Delta, Jigawa and Kogi states ahead of next year’s general elections, following court judgments.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the decision clears the way for the affected constituencies to participate in the forthcoming elections.
INEC, in a statement on June 10, by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, said the restoration complies with court orders and is in line with the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act 2026.
The restored constituencies are Nyamatsor, Ukum Afia, Konshisha III (Shangev‑Tiev), Makurdi III (South East) and Gboko III in Benue State; Aniocha North II, Ika North East II, Sapele II, Ethiope West II, Warri South West II and Warri North II in Delta State; Aujara in Jigawa State; and Adavi East, Eika, Ajaokuta North, Bassa‑Komu, Dekina Town and District, Ijumu II, Kabba‑Bunu II, Koton Karfe II, Igalaogwa and Ogugu in Kogi State.
The electoral body stated that all other timelines and activities in the revised timetable for the elections remain unchanged and will apply to the restored constituencies, and directed political parties to submit notices of their primaries ahead of the scheduled dates, citing the unique nature of the exercise.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting credible, inclusive and transparent elections across the country.
