PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has directed all his political appointees intending to contest in next year’s general elections to resign from their current positions by the end of March this year.
The directive, contained in a statement by the Head of Information and Public Relations, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Dewan Goshit, is in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026 and election timetable issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries ahead of the elections.
A circular signed by the SGF, George Akume, and issued by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, said the resignation requirement applies to all categories of presidential political appointees.
They include ministers, ministers of State, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, directors general, chief executive officers of federal agencies, parastatals, commissions, government-owned companies and other political appointees.
Affected officials are required to submit formal resignation letters through the Office of the SGF by March 31.
Tinubu stated that the measure was to ensure compliance with electoral laws, promote transparency and maintain a level-playing field for all aspirants ahead of the elections.
While urging all concerned officials to comply fully with the directive, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting credible electoral processes in Nigeria.
