PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu, in a surprise move, on Tuesday, April 21, effected a minor cabinet reshuffle, dropping Wale Edun as Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, replacing him with the newly appointed Minister of State, Taiwo Oyedele.
Also affected was the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, to be replaced by Muttaqha Rabe Darma, who has been named ministerial nominee and minister-designate.
A memo issued and signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, directed Edun to hand over to Oyedele, and Dangiwa to the Minister of State in the ministry.
It stated that all handover processes must be concluded before the close of business on Thursday, April 23.
The SGF explained that the changes were aimed at strengthening cohesion and synergy in governance, as well as enhancing the delivery of economic benefits to Nigerians under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
A statement by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, quoted Akume as assuring that efforts to reinvigorate the cabinet remains an ongoing process.
There was no indication of any future roles for the outgoing ministers, but the SGF said: “These changes are aimed at strengthening cohesion and synergy in governance, as well as achieving more impactful delivery on the economy to Nigerians, through the Renewed Hope Agenda.”
He added that the President exercised his powers under Sections 147 and 148 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) in approving the reshuffle, thanking the outgoing ministers for their service and wishing them well in their future endeavors.
He assured cabinet members that “the process of reinvigoration shall be continuous.”
