Speakership: Minority Members-Elect Caucus Search For Credible Candidates Among Them

THE minority caucus of members-elect in the House of Representatives, after a meeting on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 resolved to set up an 11-man committee to seek out credible candidates within their fold to produce a body of principal officers for all key positions in the House.

This was stated in their resolutions contained in a communique issued at the end of the second extraordinary meeting ahead of the June 13cinauguration of the 10th National Assembly.

The caucus comprises members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); Labour Party (LP); All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA); Social Democratic Party (SDP); African Democratic Party (ADC); Youth Progressive Party (YPP) and New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP).

Earlier, convener of the meeting, Fredrick Agbedi (PDP, Bayelsa State), in his welcome address, congratulated all the members for the successes so far and urged them to stay together for their common good.

 Agbedi explained that the meeting was organised to enable them access the work they had done in their various zones and reminded members on the need to stay focused and not be distracted.

Leader of the LP, George Ozodinobi, who spoke on behalf of the Southeast Caucus, said they had resolved to change the narrative, noting that the zonal caucus had resolved to follow where other caucus members has aligned with to have a new Nigeria.

On his part, Oluwole Oke urged all caucus members to remain united, assuring that the Southwest was fully aligned with the decisions of the caucuses.

  Awalu Gwadabe from the Northeast said the 10th Assembly was unique, as the ruling party does not have the highest number of members, saying the zonal caucus would make its position known in a matter of days.

From the North Central zone, Pastor Ojena said for the greater minority to succeed, members must put aside their personal interests and work as a team.

On their part, members of the Northwest caucus, represented by MD Shehu, said the zone was in on the ideas of the greater minority caucus, urging all members to have the sincerity of purpose in the journey

Lilian Orogbu re-echoed the inclusion of women in the mainstream affairs of the Assembly, adding that the issues of women in parliament must be respected.
