Southeast Nominee As CBN Director Rejects Appointment

Published:

THE Southeast nominee in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Board of Directors, Mr. Urum Kalu Eke, has turned down the offer.

President Bola Tinubu had on February 13 forwarded the names of Eke and four others to the Senate for confirmation as members of the CBN Board.

But Eke, during the plenary of the Senate on Thursday, February 29 to begin the process of screen the nominees for the confirmation, said he was currently engaged in the World Bank.

During the confirmation process, former governor of Abia State, Senator Orji  Kalu, representing Abia North Senatorial District, told the senate that Eke, who is from his constituency, had called him on the phone to reject the offer, saying it would conflict with his present job as a consultant with the World Bank.

Kalu was quoted as saying: “The nominee told me this role would conflict with his job as a consultant to the World Bank, Federal Government agencies and other private companies.”

The senate, thereafter, confirmed the appointment of the four other nominees as members of the CBN Board of Directors, following the consideration of a report of the screening exercise presented by Chairman of Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions, Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, (APC, Lagos East).

Abiru said the Committee did not clear Eke because he failed to appear before it for screening.

Those screened and confirmed were Mr. Robert Agbede; Mr. Ado Yakubu Wanka; Professor Murtala Sabo Sagagi and Mrs. Muslimat Olanike Aliyu.
