THE 76 suspects arrested in Kano State during the recent nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests for being in possession, waving or flying Russian flags have been transferred to Abuja for further investigation and possible arraignment on sedition charges.
Addressing journalists on Monday, August 12, the Kano, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Salman Garba, while providing updates on the ongoing investigations and arrests during the protests, said: “In line with the directives of the Inspector General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, to all Commands and formations, the Kano Command worked diligently and professionally towards addressing the aftermath of these events.
“These efforts resulted in the arrest of 873 suspects and the recovery of a large quantity of exhibits.”
The Police chief stated that the 76 suspects arrested for flying Russian flags during the protests were transferred to Abuja for further investigation, adding: “We have also transferred a foreigner who was among the suspects to the Force Headquarters for discreet investigation on charges of sedition.”
Garba explained that 150 persons were arrested and being prosecuted for violating the curfew imposed by the state government during the protests, while six suspects were apprehended for their alleged involvement in the destruction, arson and looting of the Kano Printing Press.
“In addition to these arrests, 600 suspects are facing prosecution for various offences, including criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, riot, theft, mischief and arson,” he added.
He also disclosed that the Police recovered substantial amounts of looted property, including two AK-47 rifles, from the suspects.
In a related development, Governor Abba Yusuf on Monday, August 12, lifted the curfew imposed on the state following the outbreak violence, looting and destruction of public and private properties during the protests.
According to the Commissioner for Information, Halilu Baba Dantiye, the decision was taken after a thorough assessment and review of the security situation in the state.
