THREE persons have been reportedly arrested by the Police over the death of a Senior Lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Matthew Uwuigbe, at a hotel in the university town.
Those taken into custody for questioning include Jacob, the hotel owner and hotel manager.
Uwuigbe was said to have lodged at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Council on Sunday, October 4, accompanied by a 21-year-old woman, later identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
He was reported to have later asked Jacob to get him some water outside, only for her to return shortly afterwards to find the lecturer motionless on the bed.
The incident was immediately reported to the Police about 8pm for investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The Edo State Police Command spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident and arrests, adding that Uwuigbe’s remains have been deposited at the mortuary of Oriaifo Memorial Hospital in Ekpoma.
According to him: “On October 5, 2026, about 8pm, the Command received a report that Matthew Uwuigbe, a lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, had lodged at a hotel in Ekpoma and engaged the services of a 21-year-old sex worker, Angela Defa Jacob.
“He subsequently sent the woman to purchase water for him, and upon her return, she found him lying dead in the room.”
Meanwhile, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mike Ade Aladenika, while confirming that Uwuigbe was a member of the institution’s staff, clarified that the incident did not occur on the university premises and the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s activities were part of his private life, and that Jacob was not a student of the university.
“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life.
“The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” Aladenika said.
