FORMER United States (US) First Lady, Michelle Obama, has revealled that her daughters- Malia and Sasha- have ‘pushed away’ from her and Barrack, with Malia even changing her name to further distance from the former First Family.
Michelle said she and her husband, Barack, respect their daughter, Malia, dropping her last name “Obama” in professional projects, and praised how both of their daughters more generally “want to be their own people.”
Malia used her middle name, Ann, as her last name for the credits of a short film she wrote and directed, The Heart, which aired at the Sundance Film Festival in 2024.
The mother-of-two said she believes her daughters took the decision because they wanted to ‘distinguish themselves’ from their famous parents as they became adults.
“Where do we begin?” she said when asked about the difficulties she faced while raising two young women in the public eye.
“Our daughters are 26 and 23, they are young adult women. But they definitely went through a period in their teen years… it was the “push away.”‘
Michelle explained that she has found that this is something that often happens to celebrity kids, noting: “They’re still doing that, and you guys know this of children with parents who are known.
“You’re trying to distinguish yourself. It’s very important for my kids to feel like they’ve earned what they are getting in the world.”
