COMEDIAN, Ayodeji Richard Makun, better known as AY, has explained that he was invited, not arrested, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly spraying money at a social event.
AY, in his reaction to insinuations on socail media that he was arrest by the anti-graft agency, stated that he was only invited by the EFCC, and not arrested, as reported.
He clarified: “If you know that much about EFCC, you can’t be arrested and still have your phone.
“An invitation and visit to the Commission do not translated to arrest.£
Also, popular Nollywood actress, Iyabo Ojo, has confirmed being quizzed by EFCC operatives over spraying of money at her daughter’s recent wedding.
In an Instagram post on Tuesday, May 6, the actress disclosed that EFCC reached out to her while she was abroad and she honoured their invitation by visiting its office on Monday, May 5, upon her return to Nigeria.
She stated: “I recently received an invitation from the EFCC while I was in the UK. On my return, I went to their office on May 5, where I was questioned about my personal details, career and more.”
Iyabo disclosed that the questioning largely centered around the celebrity wedding of her daughter, Priscilla, to Tanzanian singer, Juma Jux, last month.
She said EFCC operatives presented video clips from the event showing guests spraying both the Naira and foreign currencies.
While acknowledging that defacing the Naira is an offence, Iyabo, however, claimed she was unaware that spraying other currencies, such as the United States (US) Dollar, was also prohibited, noting: “I was shown videos from the wedding where guests were spraying money. I explained that I thought only the abuse or mutilation of the Naira was prohibited.”
She explained that EFCC operatives clarified and informed her that spraying any currency on individuals at events was against financial regulations; hence she urged Nigerians to avoid such practices at social gatherings to avoid being arrested and charged to court by the anti-graft agency.
