THE Lagos State Government has confirmed the exemption of pet bottles and sachet water, popularly known as pure water, in the ban on single-use plastics across the state.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, had recently announced that the state government would enforce the ban on single-use plastics from Sunday, July 1, this year, thereby cauasing confusion especially among sachet water manufacturers and consumers, who wondered what alternatives the state government has provided.
Responding to this concern, Wahab, while reaffirming government’s position on the matter, clarified that only single use plastics, such as styrofoam food packs and all forms of polystyrene cups (disposal cups) would be affected, adding: “Other items banned in the single use plastics category are plastic straws, plastic cutlery and all single use carrier bags and nylons that have less than 40 micron thickness.”
He said to demonstrate seriousness, government had inaugurated the newly-created Plastic Waste Management Fund, a collaborative effort between the state government and Producers Responsibility Organisations (PROs), noting that the Fund would be financed by contributions from producers and major importers, and would be jointly managed to address plastic waste challenges in the state.
The conmmissioner stressed the determination of the state government to go proceed with the enforcement of the ban on July 1 after the expiration of its 18 months moratorium since the announcement of the plan in January last year.
