FORMER President, Goodluck Jonathan, has described Nigerian politics as full of betrayers and liars, people he said are unreliable.
Speaking from firsthand experience during his years in office, especially the later days of his Presidency, Jonathan stated: “You find it difficult to see somebody who will say the same thing in the morning and in the evening.”
The former President, who said this during the 70th birthday party of his former chief of staff and also a former deputy governor of Edo State, Mike Ogiadomhe, in Benin City, however, singled out the celebrant, saying he was reliable and a dependable ally
Paying glowing tribute to Oghiadomhe, Jonathan said he is one of his most loyal allies: “I became President, and even after leaving office, one of the few friends who can give up their necks for me is Mike.
“Politics in the Nigerian context is often about betrayals. It is difficult to find someone who will say the same thing in the morning and in the evening.
“I’ve witnessed a lot of betrayals, especially my 2015 elections, and Mike is somebody who would take a bullet on my behalf. He is somebody that you can take his word to the bank.
“Most other politicians, you cannot take their words to the bank. They will tell you something, the next one hour they are saying another.”
Recently, many politicians, particularly from within his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have called on the Jonathan to contest in the 2027 general elections, including a former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido; former minister of Information, Jerry Ghana, and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed.
Although Jonathan has not personally responded to the calls, but his wife, Patience, has consistently declared that her husband would support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who she claimed supported Jonathan to win the 2011 election, and would not run against him. She restated that position recently amid the calls.
Also, some of his close allies have insisted that Jonathan will not join the race.
However, his cousin, Robert Azibaola, has insisted that Jonathan will run.
Perhaps this revelation by the former President is an indication of his mind regarding the 2027 elections.
