NIGERIA’S First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has urged sustained efforts toward advancing the rights, opportunities and empowerment of women and girls, saying the progress of women is central to national development.
Mrs. Tinubu, in a message to commemorate this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD), joined millions of Nigerians and the world to celebrate the resilience, courage and remarkable achievements of women across the country and around the world.
She stated that the yearly event provides an opportunity to reflect on the invaluable contributions women make to families, communities and national development, and reaffirming the collective responsibility to promote gender equality and inclusiveness.
Mrs. Tinubu said the theme for this year’s commemoration, ‘Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,’ underscores the urgent need for concrete actions that ensure women enjoy equal opportunities and protection under the law, adding that empowering women should not be viewed as an act of charity, but rather as a strategic investment in the future of the nation.
She said “when women are given access to education, quality healthcare, economic opportunities, leadership platforms, justice and equity, the entire society benefits,” noting that empowering women strengthens families, fosters more prosperous communities and helps build a more inclusive and sustainable nation.
Mrs. Tinubu reaffirmed the commitment of the President Bola Tinubu administration to policies and initiatives that promote the welfare, dignity and advancement of Nigerian women and girls, urging stakeholders across government, the private sector, civil society and development partners to continue working together to remove barriers that hinder the full participation of women in national life.
She encouraged Nigerian women and girls to remain steadfast, resilient and determined in pursuing their aspirations and contributing meaningfully to the growth and development of the country, noting that “when women rise, Nigeria rises.”
The First Lady wished Nigerian women and girls a memorable celebration and renewed commitment to building a society where every woman and girl can thrive.
