INEC Unveils Delineated Warri Federal Constituency Wards

Published:

IN obedience of a recent Supreme Court judgment, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially released details of Warri Federal Constituency ward delineation in Delta State, amid mixed reactions from the Ijaw, Itsekiri and Urhobo in Warri South, Warri North and Warri South-West Local Councils.
Under the new delineation, presented by the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Asaba during an emergency stakeholders’ meeting, Warri South has 20 wards, an increase from the previous 12 wards.
Two state House of Assembly constituencies were created in the area, with the Itsekiri ethnic nationality retaining one constituency and the Ijaw and Urhobo sharing the other.
In Warri North, the number of wards increased from 10 to 20, evenly split between the Ijaw and Itsekiri, in addition to two state constituencies- Warri North Constituency 1 and 11.
Warri South-West now has 20 wards, against the previous 10, with the Ijaw having 13 and Itsekiris seven wards, alongside two state constituencies.
INEC also proposed the creation of an additional House of Representatives seat for Warri North and Warri South-West Federal Constituency, subject to constitutional amendment by the National Assembly.
The ward delineation exercise ends years of legal battles and agitations by the three ethnic nationalities in Warri Federal Constituency.
