THE Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has written to Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, requesting an amendment to the pension law to remove the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
This information was shared by a former presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore, in a Facebook post late Tuesday, July 29, bearing a stamp of the recipient dated July 29.
Egbetokun’s action came a few days after retired Police officers protested over the miserable pensions paid to them under the current system.
In the letter, the IGP urged the National Assembly to prioritise the amendment process to enable the Police to exit the current pension scheme and adopt a scheme that would better address their needs.
Egbetokum had assured aggrieved retired Police officers, who staged the protest at the Force Headquarters and the National Assembly in Abuja, that the NPF was actively working to address their pension-related grievances and improve their post-service welfare.
He sympathised with the protesters, saying their welfare remained a concern for even those currently serving, adding that he had just returned from a meeting with the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, where the issue of Police pensions was discussed.
While assuring that the Force leadership was not ignoring their plight, the IGP disclosed that some things needed to be put in place to ensure that their suffering was alleviated, which he would not disclose publicly.
