Immigrations Arrest Fleeing Enugu Native Doctor At Border Crossing

Published:

THE wanted native doctor from Enugu State accused of burying his kidnapped victims alive for ritual purposes, Obi Levi Obieze, was on Wednesday, May 27, arrested at Gbaji checkpoint along the Badagry-Seme expressway by men of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).
It was reported that Obieze, also known as Obu Onyeka, Ozo Ezeani and as e dey play, e dey show, was on a commercial Bajaj motorcycle going to Seme when personnel of the Lagos State Border Patrol Command of NIS arrested him about 2.00 p.m.
Obieze, a flambouyant native doctor and resident of Umuojor village in Ezeagu Local Council of Enugu State, had reportedly escaped from the community and took a night bus and arrived at Mile 2 in Lagos, around 10a.m in his bid to escape justice.
It was reported that he took a commercial car from Mile 2 to Badagry roundabout, from where he hired a commercial Okada rider to Seme border.
The commercial motorcyclist was said to have passed the checkpoint in Gbaji a little before an officer ordered the rider to stop, recognising the person he was carrying.
Obieze allegedly tried to escape, but was quickly arrested by the officers and taken to the Command’s office, where he was detained as the controller in charge of the Command contacted NIS headquarters about the development.
Comptroller General of NIS, Mrs. Kemi Nandap, who confirmed his arrest, in a statement by the Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO), Akinsola Akinlabi, on Thursday, May 29, in Abuja, said the suspect had been declared wanted by the Enugu State Police Command over the alleged abduction of a 13-year-old girl on Tuesday, May 27.
She stated: “According to reports, the girl was kidnapped by three men while walking to the farm with her father.
“She was later rescued by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) from a shrine allegedly linked to the suspect. The incident was first reported by a national daily on Wednesday, May 28.
“Acting on credible intelligence, officers of the NIS Lagos State Border Patrol Command apprehended Obieze at the Gbaji checkpoint along the Badagry-Seme Road while he attempted to flee the country on a motorcycle.
“The suspect was found in possession of a National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) enrolment slip, which confirmed his identity.
“During preliminary questioning, he reportedly confessed to the crimes.”
Nandap, however, added that the NIS was working closely with the Police to ensure a seamless handover of the suspect for further investigation and prosecution, even as she reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to national security and border control and would continue to support law enforcement agencies in the fight against cross-border crimes.
Obieze had allegedly buried several people in the pit, including a pregnant woman, apparently for ritual purposes.
The Enugu State Police Command, on Wednesday said it collaborated with Neighbourhood Watch personnel and vigilant community members to arrest three suspects linked to the native doctor, after rescuing the 13-year-old girl who was kidnapped for suspected ritual murder by his boys.
The Command said the native doctor fled the scene before the arrival of Police operatives.
The Enugu State Government said it has demolished the buildings belonging to the native doctor following the incident.
