Family Announces Death Of Former IGP, Solomon Arase, At 69

THE Arase family has announced the death of former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase, at the age of 69 after a brief sickness.
In a statement on Sunday, August 31, by his son, Solomon Arase Jnr., the family said the former Police chief died earlier in the day at Cedercrest Hospital in Abuja.
According to the statement: “The Arase family of Benin-City, Edo State, hereby announces the passage of Solomon Ehigiator Arase, former Inspector General of Police.
“He passed on at about 9 a.m. on Sunday, 31st August, 2025, at the Cedercrest Hospital, Abuja, after a brief illness. He was aged 69.”
The family described the late Police chief as a man who served the country with distinction and upon retirement as the 18th IGP, served as chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC) and was also a member of the Body of Benchers.
“The family seeks the understanding and prayers of friends, associates and well-wishers at this difficult moment, as they make necessary arrangements for his obsequies, which will be announced in due course,” the statement said.
Arase, who was appointed IGP in April 2015 by then President, Goodluck Jonathan, had previously headed the Force’s top intelligence unit, the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau (CIIB).
He also served as Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State and later as Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Intelligence and was appointed PSC chairman in January 2023 by President Muhammadu Buhari until he was relieved of the position in June 2024 by President Bola Tinubu.
