Eguavoen Continue As Super Eagles’ Coach

Published:

INTERIM Coach, Augustine Eguavoen, would continue as Super Eagles’ Head Coach and lead the team for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against the Mediterranean Knights of Libya in October.

The executive committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) gave the approval on Thursday, September 26, following the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee.

There has been a rumour of Eguavoen’s resignation earlier this month after the Super Eagles were held to a goalless draw against the Amavubi of Rwanda in Kigali.

But Eguavoen quickly dismissed the rumour and affirmed that he was still in charge of the team and would sit down with the Federation’s hierarchy to evaluate its performance, following the two matches played.

The 58-year-old former player had taken charge of the squad he had led three times previously, steered the three-time African champions to a 3-0 defeat of Benin Republic and scoreless draw with Rwanda earlier this month.

Eguavoen and the current technical crew, which also includes Fidelis Ilechukwu, Daniel Ogunmodede, Olatunji Baruwa and Tomaz Zorec, would also take charge of the Super Eagles B team for the qualifying campaign for next year’s African Nations Championship, otherwise known as CHAN.

The Super Eagles will face the Mediterranean Knights of Libya on October 11th and October 15th, with the first leg scheduled for the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
