THE Bayelsa State House of Assembly has approved the nomination of Peter Akpe, Chief of Staff to Governor Douye Diri, as the Deputy Governor of the state.
Akpe had served in the Rivers and Bayelsa states civil services before going into active politics. He was a two-term member of the Assembly and majority leader from 2011 to 2019.
He was head of Administration in the Office of the Deputy Governor (2006-2007) and commissioner with the Assembly Service Commission, and a commissioner under the Seriake Dickson administration between 2008 and 2011.
Akpe, currently the Pastor in charge of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Province 1 in Yenagoa, the state capital, was unveiled during the Assembly’s plenary on Tuesday, February 24,when the Speaker, Abraham Ingobere, read a letter from the governor.
He briefly appeared at the plenary and was asked to take a bow and go, as a former lawmaker.
Akpe and Diri have their maternal home from Ayamasa community in Ekeremor Local Council, where their mothers hail from, but his father hails from from Ebedebiri in Sagbama Local Council.
His nomination followed the death of the former deputy governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, on December 11, last year, after he collapsed and died in his office.
Ewhrudjakpo was buried on January 30, this year.
