FORMER vice president, Atiku Abubakar, has won the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket, beating former minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, and businessman, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen in the party’s primary election. President Bola Tinubu had earlier emerged as candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) with almost 11 million votes.
Atiku polled a total of 1,846,370 votes against Amaechi’s 504,117 votes, and Hayatu-Deen’s 177,120 votes in the primary conducted through direct voting across the country on Monday, May 25.
Both Amaechi and Hayatu-Ddeen had, however, rejected the process, pointing to widespread irregularities before the final collation of results began.
The former Rivers State governor describing the results as “concocted,” alleging massive voter disenfranchisement and manipulation during the exercise, while Hayatu-Deen accused party officials of rigging and compromising the credibility of the process.
Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, secured the ticket of the African Action Congress (AAC) by adoption at the party’s presidential primaries held in Abuja on Tuesday, May 26.
Chairman of the primary election committee, Kayode Babayemi, said Sowore’s adoption showed the party’s confidence in his commitment to justice, good governance and democracy.
At its national convention later, Sowore also stepped down as the AAC national chairman to make way for Samuel Ajeigbe as the new National Chairman.
Similarly, former governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke, emerged as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) after polling the highest number of votes at its presidential primary held on Tuesday in Abuja.
The party’s National Chairman, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, while announcing the outcome, said Duke scored a total of 6,499 votes to defeat his closest rival, Kingsley Yakubu, who secured 2,699 votes, while Nnaoke Ufere, an academic and policy expert, came third with 784 votes.
