Asagba Of Asaba Dies At 99

Published:

THE 13th Asagba of Asaba, the Delta State, capital, Prof. Joseph Chike Edozien, is dead.

He reportedly passed on on Wednesday, February 7.

Born on July 28, 1925, in Asaba to the famous family of Edozien, who were said to be the direct descendants of Nnebisi, the founder of modern day Asaba, the late monarch was elected as chairman of the Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers in 1997.

A former Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Edozien was the first Black-African indigenous Dean of Medicine in a foreign land.

Before now, plans were in top gear and the process had commenced for his centenary celebration in July this year.

Palace Secretary, Chief Patrick Ndili, said the revered monarch was only hospitalised and not dead, as being reported.

As is traditional, it is only the royal family, through an official statement from the palace that can formally announce the passage of a reigning monarch. All other reports are regarded as speculations until that official confirmation is made.

As the public awaits the official information that the Asagba has finally joined his ancestors, messages of condolence have started pouring in.
