A MEMEBER of Nigeria’s 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winning national male team, Imo State–born Henry Nwosu, is dead.
The talented midfielder, according to his former teammate and fellow Cup winner, Segun Odegbami, died about 4a.m. on Saturday, March 14, at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where he had been receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) since Wednesday, March11.
In a post on his Facebook page, Odegbami wrote: “After five days in hospital battling for his life, the one I call ‘Youngest Millionaire’ passed on at 4a.m. this morning at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja, Lagos.
“It is with deep pain in my heart that I have to be the conveyor of the news of the death of Henry Nwosu.
“May he rest peacefully with our Creator in Heaven.”
Nwosu was the youngest member of the squad when the then Green Eagles won Nigeria’s first continental title at home.
His death comes days after former Super Eagles coach, Festus Adegboye Onigbinde, who led Nigeria to the 2002 FIFA World Cup, died on March 9 at the age of 88.
Nwosu plied his trade for several Nigerian sides, including New Nigeria Bank F.C. and Stationery Stores F.C. before retiring from active football to go into coaching and youth development.
