A FEDERAL High Court in Abuja, on Tuesday, January 6, granted the request of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), as moved by its lawyer, Ekele Iheanacho (SAN), by issuing an order for the interim forfeiture of 57 property, located in Abuja, Kebbi, Kano, and Kaduna states, suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities associated with the immediate past attorney general of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami (SAN).
Justice Emeka Nwite issued the order while ruling on an ex-parte motion filed by the anti-graft agency.
Justice Nwite ruled: “It is hereby ordered that an interim order of this honourable court is hereby made, forfeiting to the Federal Government of Nigeria, the properties described in Schedule One below, which are reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities.”
He ordered the EFCC to publish the interim order in any national daily to invite “any person(s) or body (ies) who may have interest in the properties listed in the schedule to show cause, within 14 days of the publication, why a final order of forfeiture to the Federal Government of Nigeria of the said assets and properties, should not be made.”
The Judge subsequently adjourned the matter until January 27 for the EFCC to report on compliance with the order for publication.
