Army Probes Corporal’s Suspected Suicide After Killing Wife

THE Nigerian Army has launched a full-scale investigation the an incident in which a soldier, identified as Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi of the 221 Battalion, reportedly killed his wife before taking his own life at Wawa Cantonment in Niger State.
The Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade in Ilorin, Kwara State, Capt. Stephen Nwankwo, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, October 13, said the bodies of Femi and his wife were discovered on October 11 inside their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters within the cantonment.
He said preliminary findings indicated that the soldier had earlier sought permission from his superior officer to attend to personal matters and was expected to resume duty.
However, both he and his wife were found dead under unclear circumstances hours later.
The Army said the incident had thrown the barracks into confusion and grief, assuring that a thorough investigation was underway to determine the motive and circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Nwankwo said the remains of the couple have been preserved, while the 22 Armoured Brigade Commander, Brig-Gen. Ezra Barkins, has ordered an in-depth inquiry.
Expressing regret over the tragedy, the Army extended condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of the deceased couple.
While reiterating its commitment to uncovering the truth and implementing preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future, it appealled to the public for patience and cooperation.
