*Court Orders Remanded Pending Bail Perfection

THE Delta State Police Command, on Monday, September 1, arraigned activist, Victor Ojei, popularly known as Wong Box, in court.
Ojei is facing trial on a three-count charge of threat to life, assault occasioning harm and threatening violence, contrary to Sections 355, 86, and 249 of the Criminal Code.
According to the Command’s spokesman, Bright Edafe (SP), “nobody is above the law;” hence the activist was remanded in prison custody, pending when he is able to perfect his bail conditions.
Recall that Edafe (SP) had in a press statement on Friday, August 29, stated that the Command had launched a manhunt for Ojie for jumping bail after he allegedly assaulted some staff of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) on a electricity disconnection routine.
According to the statement: “The suspect was arrested on the 14th August 2025 for multiple offences of assault occasioning harm, threat to life and threatening violence, contrary to Section 355, 86 and 249 of the Criminal Code, and granted bail on the same date.
“The suspect has since refused to show up at the Police station for further investigation.
“It is pertinent for the command to state the fact as follows: On the 29th of May 2025, about 1100hours, staff of BEDC went on official duty of disconnection of electricity supply from defaulting customers, but on getting to the house of the suspect Ojei at Anyameluhor Street, Asaba, whose outstanding bill sums up to Four Million, Eight Hundred and Seventy Thousand, Seven Hundred and Eighty Naira, was disconnected.
“The suspect, upon sighting the BEDC staff, rushed to them and attacked them with a cutlass, insisting that they must reconnect his compound. The technician, out of fear of being murdered by the suspect, reconnected the light.
“The suspect did not stop at that; he continued to threaten them and in the process, a pregnant BEDC fell, and Ojei charged at her with the cutlass.
“In the attached video, the suspect was heard visibly shouting at the BEDC staff, stating the following: Why will they disconnect his house. You don’t know where you came to? Did you ask questions?”
According to the statement, Ojei ordered them to reconnect the light and called on one Maduka (surname unknown) to bring him an iron, that he will burst their heads, shouting, “I GO CUT UNA.”
He alleged that the suspect went inside and brought out a cutlass, shouting, ‘I go cut you and nothing go happen,’ saying next time, the BEDC staff should ask questions and he will tell them that he is a politician.
“It is also pertinent to state that one of the BEDC staff who was pregnant at the time of the incident was rushed to the hospital, where she was treated for over two weeks.
“The Command wishes to reiterate that nobody is above the law, and the suspect is not an exception. The Command will ensure that the suspect is re-arrested and brought to justice.”
Ojei has since denied jumping bail, insisting he communicated the Investigating Police Officer to explain that he was not going to be around for some days, but will make himself available upon his return from his trip.
He urged the public to disregard the Command’s statement and attempt to tanish his reputation, adding that he had since reported to the IPO, as promised in his earlier communication.
Ojei is a popular rights activist in Delta State and his activism had previously seen him on collition with the Police and other security agencies, especially over alleged rights abuse and officers’ conducts.
