Sowunmi: I’ll Work With Tinubu If Appointed

*’If I Ever Leave PDP, I’ll Join APC Because Of Buhari, Tinubu’

A CHIEFTAIN of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and until recently, strong supporter of former vice president and the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Segun Sowunmi, said he was ready to work with President Bola Tinubu, if he appoints him.
He, however, added that he would resign from the opposition party if the opportunity arises, adding that if he ever leaves PDP, he will only join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) because of Tinubu and former President, Muhammadu Buhari.
In a television interview, shortly after visiting Tinubu at his Lagos residence, Sowunmi said he has no problem working with Tinubu, despite his previous criticisms of his APC-led administration, noting: “There has never been a doubt that I can work with him. There’s never been a doubt.
“If I am going to work with the President, I’m going to leave the PDP.”
The former spokesperson for Atiku’s 2023 presidential campaign said he would leave the PDP if the party leaders “insist on destroying” it, explaining that he is endeared to the APC because Tinubu and his predecessor, Buhari, are stable leaders, who unlike other leaders, “don’t jump from one political tendency to the other.”
He added: “Let me be very upfront. I’ve always said and I’ve said it many times over, if I ever leave the PDP, damn, I’m going to the APC. And why is that? Because at least I can accept that the two main pillars of the APC, Buhari and Tinubu, are stable people. They don’t jump from one political tendency to the other, and have been damn stable too since 1998.”
He stated that if the need arises for him to join the ruling party, he would first consult his friend, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, “I will have a sit down with him. I’ll ask for the constitution of the party, I will read it.”
While disagreeing with and condemning the political coalition being spearheaded by Atiku, the former PDP governorship candidate in Ogun State said the coalition talks irritates him, as it makes the PDP unstable.
“One of the reasons why I’m irritated by this talk of coalition that they are doing is that I can’t imagine how decent political people will think that it is their responsibility to be looking for new platform every season.
“I don’t agree. So, if I must leave, I must at least go to where I think they can also be stable forever.”
Reminded that he had during previous interviews dubbed the same government as “rudderless” and accused it of “ethnic concentration and lopsidedness,” Sowunmi, reminiscent of the same position held by Daniel Bwala until he met with and was offered a political appointment, spoke admiringly of Tinubu’s mental capacity and decisiveness.
He stated: “The President was mentally and psychologically alert. I’ve known him for a while and I know how he thinks.”
He narrated a previous encounter with Tinubu where the President appeared open-minded and direct, noting: “He opened up by saying whether I wanted to be on an appointment. The only time I was ever on an appointment in government was the government of Otunba Gbenga Daniel, when he was in government. .
“Credit to him. He knew I was like a pain. You know why? I can’t stand when people get on one after the other in meetings just to do psychophancy instead of cutting to the chase. I used to do that a lot.”
