THE Senate on Thursday, September 26, approved the Southwest Development Commission Establishment Bill 2024 after a Third Reading.
The passage followed the submission of a report its Committee on Special Duties, led by Kaka Shehu Lawan, during plenary.
In his presentation, Lawan highlighted that the Bill aims to drive socio-economic growth in the Southwest region and once established, the Commission would access funding from the Federation Account and development partners to address infrastructural gaps and ecological challenges in the region.
After a clause-by-clause review, the Bill was passed for the Third Reading.
Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session, commended the committee for its work, expressing confidence that the Commission would help resolve key developmental issues in the Southwest.
Jibrin further noted that President Bola Tinubu was expected to assent to the Bill, as he has done with similar regional development initiatives aimed at fostering nationwide progress.
