WAEC Releases 2024 SSCE Results, Withholds 11.9% Over Malpractice

Published:

THE West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

The body, which disclosed this on Monday, August 12, in a message on its X handle, said: “The West African Examinations Council is pleased to inform candidates who sat WASSCE for school candidates 2024 that the result has officially been released today, Monday, August 12, 2024.”

This year’s WASSCE was held for a period of seven weeks and six days between April 30 and June 24.

A total of 1,814,736 candidates registered for the examination from 25,126 secondary schools across Nigeria, out of which 1,805,216 candidates sat the examination.

Out of this number, 1,685,889 candidates (93.39 per cent) have all their papers processed and released, while 119,327 candidates (representing 6.61 per cent) have some subjects still being processed.

According to Mr. Amos Josiah Dangut, Head of WAEC Nigeria, the results of 215,267 candidates (representing 11.92 per cent of the total) were being withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice.

This, the Council said, amounts to a 4.37 per cent decrease from the 16.29 per cent recorded in last year’s WASSCE for school candidates.

A performance analysis shows that 1,332,089 candidates (representing 73.79 per cent) obtained credit and above in a minimum of any five subjects (with or without English and/or Mathematics).

A total of 1,301,941 candidates (representing 72.12 per cent) obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

A year-on-year comparison for this category showed that this year’s WASSCE saw a 7.69 per cent decrease from the 79.81 per cent pass rate recorded last year.
