A FORMER commissioner for Technical Education in Delta State, Joan Onyemaechi, has regained her freedom in circumstances yet unclear, and said to be receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital, over one week after her abduction in Asaba.

It could not be ascertained if any ransom was paid to secure her release, but news of her freedom has also been confirmed by the state Police Command, whose spokesman, Mr. Bright Edafe, in a terse statement of Saturday morning, August 10, said: “…Just officially confirmed Hon. Joan Onyemaechi (Ada-Anioma) has been released by her abductors

“Details coming. This is confirmed, pls.”

A few days ago, there were online reports that she had been killed and her body and that of her aide, who was taken along with her, were discovered by the banks of River Niger in Onitsha, Anambra State.

This was immediately debunked by her family and the Police as untrue and fake news.

The former member of the House of Representatives was kidnapped on July 30 from her church premises, off Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) road in the state capital about 4pm, during an incident in which two persons, including a policeman, were killed.

The kidnappers had reportedly demanded a ransom of N1billion, but it was unclear if any payment was made before her release.
