*I Didn’t Discuss Release Of Kanu With Southeast Govs, Says Obasanjo

THE leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has reportedly agreed to comply with the conditions set by the Federal Government for his release from the custody of the Department of State Service (DSS).

This was disclosed by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South), who led about 15 federal lawmakers to a closed-door meeting with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), in Abuja,on Wednesday, July 3, over Kanu’s release.

Abaribe, speaking on behalf of the lawmakers, expressed optimism that the AGF would convince the Federal Government to consider releasing Kanu, saying his prolonged detention was contributing to heightened insecurity and unrest in the Southeast .

The meeting followed Southeast governors’ decision to appeal to President Bola Tinubu for Kanu’s freedom.

Recall that a group of 50 members from the House of Representatives across political divide and from different sections of the country, had earlier urged the President to instruct the AGF to use Section 174 of the Constitution to end the terrorism-related charges against Kanu in court.

Meanwhile, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has denied discussing Kanu’s release with the Southeast governors in Enugu on Tuesday, July 2.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Kehinde Akinyemi, on Wednesday, July 3, in Abeokuta, Obasanjo recalled that he and and Chief Emeka Anyaoku met with the governors on their own invitation to discuss regional development issues, insisting that the purported release of the IPOB by the Federal Government was not part of the discussion.

“The meeting with them was at my invitation and of Chief Emeka Anyaoku before their summit begins. The issue of Nnamdi Kanu was not on the agenda and was not discussed in my presence,” Obasanjo said.
