THE Kano State Police Command has deployed additional armed security personnel to the two palaces housing the contending emirs in the metropolitan local councils of Kano.
The outgoing Commissioner of Police, now an Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Mr. Usaini Gumel, who confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Monday, June 24, said the personnel were to handle any unforeseen circumstances around the identified areas, prevent security threats and maintain peaceful atmosphere, pending the outcome of the emirship tussle.
Gumel said the Command had reinforced its personnel deployment plans to ensure adequate security and peaceful coexistence in the state, noting that armed personnel have been deployed to provide security at the Kofar Kudu Palace residence of Emir Muhammadu Sunusi 11, and the Nasarawa Mimi Palace residence of Emir Aminu Bayero.
The Police appeal for public support and urged residents to provide information that could aid in maintaining peace, progress and political stability, while expressing its commitment to providing the required security that would enable all residents to pursue their legitimate activities without threats to lives and property.
As a result, operatives of the Command have taken over the security of the main palace of the Emir of Kano, displacing local hunters who had been guarding the reinstated Emir, Sanusi II, since his return to the palace.
The local hunters, popularly known as Yan Tauri, were deployed to the palace en masse last month following rumours that federal authorities were planning to forcefully remove Sanusi II and return Ado Bayero to the main palace.
By Sunday evening, June 23, a team of security agents took charge of security at the palace after ousting the hunters.
