SIX members of the Labour Party (LP) in the Enugu State House of Assembly on Thursday, March 28 defected to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during plenary.
The defectors are the Chief Whip and member representing Igbo-Eze North State Constituency 1, Ejike Ezeh; Deputy Chief Whip and member representing Enugu South Rural, Princess Obiajulu Ugwu; member representing Nsukka East, Pius Onyekachi Ezugwu; member representing Oji River, Osita Eze; member representing Igbo-Etiti West, William Amuka and member representing Enugu North Urban, Johnson Ani.
With this development, the PDP is now the majority party with 18 members, while LP has six members.
The LP at the national level is currently embroiled in internal crisis between the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), which is claiming ownership and alleging being sidelined, and embattled National Chairman of the party, Mr. Julius Abure, whose tenure is said to have expired.
Abure was on Wednesday, March 27 purportedly re-elected at a ‘national convention’ at Nnewi, Anambra State, which witnessed the absence of major chieftains of the party, including its presidential candidate in last year’s presidential election, Mr. Peter Obi, who incidentally is a former governor of the state.
That convention remains contentious, as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did not monitor it, as stipulated by law, nor observed by most media organisations.
