ONDO State Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has directed the state Ministries of Environment, as well as Health to commence extensive fumigation of Igbokoda River, following complaints by residents over strong stench emanating from the river, where the Nigerin Air Force (NAF) aircraft crashed last week.
This is to prevent possible outbreak of diseases, as the river serves as a major source of livelihood for residents of Igbokoda and neighbouring communities.
A statement by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, on Wednesday, October 14, said Aiyedatiwa also directed the Ilaje Local Government to water tankers available for the continuous distribution of potable water to residents if the river is found to be severely polluted and unsuitable for use.
The arrangement is to remain in place pending a lasting intervention to address the situation.
The governor further directed the two ministries to provide nose masks and other essential health kits to residents to protect them from potential health hazards.
He reiterated the state government’s commitment to providing all necessary support to NAF in its ongoing evacuation efforts, as well as ensuring the welfare and safety of residents of the affected communities.
