OPERATIVES of the Ilaro Division of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested Adewale Ogoemi Arojah for allegedly impersonating popular cleric, Muyiwa Akogun, also known on Facebook as ‘Prophet Dr. Muyiwa Akogun,’ and defrauding unsuspecting members of over N18million.
This was after a complaint filed on October 3 by Akogun after being alerted by the public to fraudulent activities being carried out through a duplicated Facebook profile bearing his identity.
Following the complaint, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the Division deployed intelligence and detective operatives to track the suspect to a nearby village in Ajegunle, along the Ilaro/Ibogun axis, where he was arrested.
The Police said during interrogation, Arojah confessed to impersonating the cleric and using his identity to offer fake prophecies and prayer services to vulnerable individuals in Nigeria and the Diaspora.
It said preliminary investigations revealled that the suspect targeted those seeking spiritual assistance through the prophet’s Facebook page, gained their trust and allegedly defrauded them of over N18million.
The Command’s spokesman, Oluseyi Babaseyi (DSP), said Arojah had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation, while investigation would determine the full extent of the crime, identify possible accomplices and facilitate prosecution.
