DELTA State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed grief over the death of journalist and State Correspondent of News Direct, Dave Okpogadie, describing his passing as a huge loss to the journalism profession and the state. Okpogadie died on Saturday, July 18, after a courageous battle with jaw cancer for over two years. Oborevwori, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, extended his condolences to the Okpogadie family, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council and the entire media community. Describing Okpogadie as a consummate professional whose dedication, integrity and commitment to journalism earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and the wider society, the governor noted that the late journalist's courage, resilience and unwavering faith throughout his prolonged illness served as an inspiration to many who stood by him during his difficult journey. Oborevwori prayed for the peaceful repose of Okpogadie’s soul, praying to God to grant his family, friends, colleagues and members of the state NUJ the fortitude to bear the loss. In the same vein, a delegation of the state Council of the NUJ, led by its Chairman, Churchill Oyowe, in the company of Asaba Correspondents Chapel Chairman, Ifeanyi Olannye; Financial Secretary, Efe Ogbo; Omon-Julius Onabu, and Agbamu Onos of Indigenous Chapel, on Sunday, July 19, paid a condolence visit to Okpogadie’s Issele Azagba residence to condole with the family. Oyowe, while expressing the council’s pains over Okpogadie's death, assured the family of the union’s support to ensure a peaceful internment. Earlier, Olannye, while also condoling the family, described Okpogadie’s passing as painful. The delegation prayed for a peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul and for God to grant his family, associates and the union the fortitude to bear his loss. Meanwhile, a condolence register has been opened at the Chapels office and a seven-day mourning in honour of Okpogadie.
