PRESIDENTIAL candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has alleged that his repeated arrests and imprisonment are not just a result of recent political disagreements, but part of decades-long campaign by Nigeria’s ruling elite to silence him since he was 18.
Sowore, who stated this while speaking on a television programme on Friday, July 3, Morning Brief, on Friday, said his latest legal troubles are only the latest chapter in a struggle that began more than three decades ago, noting: “They have been after me since I was 18 years old in this country, 1989.
“The military was after me. They have tried to kill me in this country.”
The rights activist dismissed suggestions that his current prosecution was due to the blurred boundaries between free speech and criminal defamation, insisting the case is politically motivated.
He stated: “I am being punished by people in power for standing up for my rights and standing up for the rights of other people.”
