JUSTICE Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted an N200million bail to rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore.
Justice Umar, in his ruling on Tuesday, June 30, ordered Sowore to produce two sureties, one of who must be a traditional ruler from Sowore’s community, while the other must own landed property in Abuja, both of who must be verified by the prosecution.
The trial judge also ordered Sowore to deposit his international passport with the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court, pending the determination of the case.
Justice Umar thereafter released the defendant to his lawyers and adjourned the case until Monday, July 6, for the opening of Sowore’s defence in the alleged cybercrime charges against him.
The Judge had earlier in the month ordered Sowore’s remand in Kuje Correctional Centre, pending the hearing and determination of his motion for stay of the order for revocation of his bail and bench warrant.
Justice Umar also dismissed Sowore’s earlier application seeking his recusal from the case on the ground of alleged bias.
The Department of State Services (DSS) is prosecuting Sowore for allegedly making false claims against the person of President Bola Tinubu by referring to him as “a criminal” in a post on his “X” and Facebook accounts.
