FORMER Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu Abubakar, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP) after losing the May 21 Nasarawa State governorship primary election, citing alleged irregularities and lack of internal democracy in the exercise.
Adamu’s resignation and defection were announced in a statement issued on Monday, May 26, by Director of the Contact and Mobilisation Committee of his campaign organisation, Isa Nathaniel, following extensive consultations with political associates, supporters, delegates and stakeholders across the state.
The statement said Adamu and his supporters defected to SDP over a “manipulated and prearranged” primary process, which was a “disgraceful charade that masqueraded as the APC governorship primary election.”
He alleged that independently collated results from wards and local government areas indicated that he had initially won before the process was “hijacked by desperate political merchants.”
The organisation accused the Nassarawa State APC leadership of abandoning fairness and transparency in favour of vested political interests.
Recall that Adamu lost the ticket to Ahmed Aliyu Wadada, and officially submitted his resignation letter to party officials in his Makama Ward, Lafia Local Council, and was received by the ward’s Deputy Chairman, Ahmed Awwal, and Secretary, Usman Abdullahi.
Adamu said recent developments within the APC, particularly the conduct of the governorship primary, made it impossible for him to continue his political activities under the party.
He stressed that internal democracy, fairness, transparency and equal opportunity were essential principles that should guide any democratic party, values that were not reflected and had eroded his confidence in the party’s leadership and processes in the state.
He added that he would continue his political ambition on another platform after consulting with his supporters, allies and family members.
Official results from the primary showed that Adamu polled 39,675 votes, while Wadada, who Governor Abdullahi Sule had openly endorsed ahead of the exercise, secured 195,285 votes to emerge as the governorship candidate.
