TERRORISTS, led Mohammed Fulani, have killed 11 civilians in a reprisal attack on two communities in Kankia Local Council of Katsina State about 12pm on Sunday, May 3.
The attackers, armed with automatic weapons, reportedly stormed Gwalgoro and Jeka da Kolo villages in their numbers.
A statement by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Muazu, which was confirmed by spokesman of the state Police Command, Abubakar Aliyu (DSP, said the terrorists had earlier attempted two separate attacks, which were thwarted by security operatives.
According to Aliyu: “On 29th April 2026, at Gadar Yan Tulu and Kartaka villages of Kankia LGA, the Command foiled a bandit’s cattle rustling attack and recovered 205 rustled animals, comprising 91 cows and 114 sheep.
“On May 2, operatives of the Command foiled another attack on Matinjin village, as several bandits escaped with various degrees of gunshot injuries due to the intense firefight, and recovered eight bandits’ operational motorcycles.
“Regrettably, on May 3, about 1200hrs, following these operational successes, the bandits regrouped and launched a reprisal attack on the Jeka da Kolo and Kwalgoro villages of Kankia LGA.
“Eleven persons were fatally shot during the attack before Police tactical teams re-mobilised and repelled the assailants.”
He said the Commissioner of Police, Ali Umar Fage, while condemning the reprial attack, which he described the attack as cowardly and barbaric, extended his condolences to the families of the deceased.
Aliyu added: “The CP has immediately deployed additional tactical teams to the area and ordered an aggressive, intelligence-led manhunt to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
“Bush combing operations and coordinated patrols have been intensified to track down the fleeing suspects and prevent further attacks.
“Efforts are being sustained to identify and arrest all persons involved in the attack and ensure they face the full wrath of the law.”
On its part, the state government, while also condemning the attacks, condoled families of the victims, urging the people to continue to share timely information with security agencies that would assist in tackling security challenges in the state.
