THE Delta State Police Command has assured that the policeman who shot and killed a suspect in Effurun, captured in a viral video, will be tried for murder.
The Command’s spokesman, Bright Edafe (SP), who disclosed this during a television programme on Wednesday, April 29, said the officer who pulled the trigger, identified as Nuhu Usman (ASP), had been moved to the Force Headquarters in Abuja to face disciplinary action, following his arrest on Tuesday, April 28.
Edafe said Usman acted unprofessionally and his action could only be explained spiritually, noting that it was a professional protocol for Usman’s face to be covered in the press statement issued by the Command announcing his arrest.
Recall that the extra-judicial killing of 28-year-old Oghenemine ‘Million’ Ogidi, said to be an upcoming musician, in what appears to be summary execution by Usman has been attracting public outrage.
According to Police account, the incident occurred on April 26, when operatives attached to Area Command in Effurun, acting on intelligence, apprehended the deceased while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel containing “a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.”
The Command stated: “The Police officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, discharged his firearm, leading to the death of the suspect.”
Edafe, saying “spirituality may not be far from it,”
added that the Command was still struggling to understand what led to the officer’s action.
He said: “Since my six years of public relations, this is my most difficult moment, because having an incident that cannot be explained is very difficult. There is no explanation for this. That policeman, I just don’t get what I would say was wrong with him.
“Police cannot attribute the problem to spirituality, but that may not be far from it, because that is the only explanation one can give to what he did.”
A statement had earlier said the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force had directed the immediate transfer of the officer and his team to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where they will face the Force Disciplinary Committee for summary disciplinary measures and prosecution.
According to the statement: “The Inspector General of Police extends his condolences to the family of the deceased and assures them that justice will be served in accordance with the law.
“He further urges members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding as the disciplinary and legal processes take their course.”
Meanwhile, the senator epresenting Delta Central, Ede Dafinone, while condemning the killing of Ogidi, an indigene of Ujevwu in Udu Local Council, demanded an immediate and transparent investigation into the incident.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Dafinone described the killing as “heinous,” saying security operatives responsibile for protecting lives must never turn their weapons against innocent citizens.
According to the statement: “It is with deep shock and profound sadness that I received the news of the tragic death of Oghenemine Million Ogidi, a 28-year-old youth from Ujevwu, Udu Local Government Area, who was reportedly killed on the 26th of April, 2026, in Effurun, Delta State.
“This extrajudicial killing is a heinous act that I condemn in the strongest possible terms. The sanctity of human life is paramount, and it is utterly unacceptable for those entrusted with the protection of citizens to turn their weapons against them in such a reckless and unwarranted manner.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Ogidi family and the entire Udu community during this incredibly difficult time. No parent should have to endure the agony of burying a child under such preventable and traumatic circumstances.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family as they navigate this profound loss, and I share in their grief as we demand accountability for this inexcusable loss of life.”
The senator urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Delta State Police Commissioner and the state Command to immediately launch a comprehensive and transparent investigation into this incident to ensure the “trigger-happy” officer responsible is brought to justice.
“My office will actively interface with the Police leadership to monitor the progress of this investigation, ensuring that no stone is left unturned and that the law takes its full course to bring closure and justice to the Ogidi family,” he stated.
In the viral online video, Ogidi was seen with his hands tied, pleading for his life and offering to assist the officers by taking them to a suspect he claimed deceived him.
Speaking in pidgin English, he said: “Officer, I beg, I go tell you everything. Na my friend na him deceive me. Him dey Sapele, I go carry you go there.”
But despite his pleas, the officer, who appeared to be interrogating him, now identified as Usman, fired multiple shots at the victim’s legs, reloaded his rifle with bullets from a colleague and shot the victim in the head at close range.
From all indications, the 30-second video may have been secretly recorded by one of the killer-officer’s colleagues at the scene.
Following the final shooting, some officers at the scene expressed concern, while others were heard hailing the shooter, chanting Ogbe gbe.
The policemen were said to have carried away the body as they all fled the scene.
