RESIDENTS of Shonun community in Riyom Local Council and Hurum in Gashish District of Barkin Ladi Local Council of Plateau State were thrown into yet another mourning, following coordinated attacks that left at least six persons dead and several others wounded.
Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Tengong Rwang, who disclosed this on a television programme, said the incidents happened separately on the same night when the assailants arrived on foot, armed with sophisticated weapons.
Rwang stated that four persons were killed in Hurum, while five others sustained injuries and were receiving treatment, while in Shonun, two persons were confirmed dead and three others wounded.
He alleged that prior to the incidents, residents of Shonun had raised alarm over the influx of unknown herders into the area and had reported to security agencies without any visible response.
He added that in the past week, herders residing around the village had been bringing in unfamiliar persons in trucks, forcing residents to evacuate women and children from the area out of fear of possible attacks.
Rwang said repeated attacks over the years have left many residents displaced and many having to flee to safer towns, noting that local vigilantes attempted to repel the attackers, but were overwhelmed due to the attackers’ superior firepower; hence the casualties recorded.
Rwang expressed frustration over what he described as the ineffectiveness of security presence in Shonun, insisting that despite the existence of security units in the area, little has been done to curb the recurring violence, even as he urged government to act swiftly and rid the communities of the attackers.
