TheCardinal is a publication with focus on socio-economic and political activities of the people, culture and developments of Nigeria.
TheCardinal is conceptualised to give authentic perspective of events to the growing number of readership audience that requires such information on the human condition, politics, culture, the environment, social and economic developments to make informed choices and decisions on issues that affect them, wherever they are, be it in Nigeria or abroad.
Background Brief
FACED with a new challenge, where events in the country are being distorted, misrepresented or reported to suit certain mindsets, while the people are further marginalised or victimised by old political allies and thinking, there is a need to adopt a new approach in letting the views of the people and country known.
The traditional media- print and electronic- are being cowed or blackmailed to take positions that are inimical to the interest of their people in order to survive.
The culture of compromising managers of information, which gains ascendancy during electioneering campaigns, is being reinforced, thereby creating a new situation where major news events that were hitherto given prominence are downgraded or ignored.
The culture of democratic environment is being replaced with that of brazen dictatorship.
The emerging culture of opposition view points and alternative actions are being stifled by authoritarian practices and policies, as well as disregard for civil liberties and the rule of law.
The most reliable opposition to the government now are the social media and online bloggers, even though this platform is also being used to distort information to the online community, which has a considerable presence of young minds that have been conditioned to reason in a particular way.
It is against this background that we are introducing TheCardinal.
